A 44-year-old man from the UK has taken on one of the most unusual home projects the internet has seen this year — and thousands are already watching.
Instead of renovating a shed or building a patio, Dave Billings from Derbyshire bought part of a Boeing 737… with plans to bury it underground.
Yes — literally.
From Facebook Marketplace to Backyard Bunker
Dave purchased the tail section of a retired Boeing 737 on Facebook Marketplace for around £4,000 (about $5,000).
But this isn’t an aviation collector’s display piece.
He intends to turn the aircraft fuselage into a fully functioning underground bunker.
And he’s not doing it quietly.

A Former Military Site With a Hidden Tunnel
Dave’s home sits on land that was once part of a military camp. Beneath the property already lies an old underground shelter with a tunnel stretching more than 10 meters (about 33 feet).
Now he’s expanding the system.
His plan? Bury the aircraft section approximately four meters (13 feet) underground, insulate it, reinforce it with concrete, and integrate it into the existing tunnel network.
It’s not just a quirky idea.
It’s a full-scale underground conversion.

Enter Through the Original Plane Door
One of the most eye-catching parts of the project?
The entrance to the bunker will be the plane’s original aircraft door.
Inside, Dave plans to install:
- Sleeping areas
- A small kitchen
- Storage space
- Functional utilities
He even intends to restore the plane’s original vacuum toilet system — keeping the interior as authentic as possible while adapting it for underground living.

Designed to Withstand Emergencies
According to Dave, the bunker is being built with resilience in mind.
He estimates the total project will cost around £25,000 (approximately $32,000). Once completed, he believes the structure will be capable of offering protection from extreme conditions — including radioactive fallout in a major emergency scenario.
While some might call it extreme, others see it as preparedness.
A Viral DIY Project
Dave is documenting every step of the process on his YouTube channel, where viewers can watch the excavation, reinforcement work, and interior transformation in real time.
The project has already attracted widespread attention online — with many praising the creativity, while others question whether burying an airplane is taking “DIY” to a whole new level.

Is This the Future of Bunker Living?
Private bunkers and reinforced shelters have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially after global events heightened concerns about security and resilience.
But turning part of a passenger jet into an underground refuge?
That’s a first for many observers.
Whether it’s eccentric or visionary, one thing is certain:
This is not your average backyard renovation.
And if Dave pulls it off, it may become one of the most talked-about DIY bunker projects in the UK.
